Surgery Scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 19

Anna had a bad day on Monday. As I said in my previous post, she started seizing on the right side of her brain Monday morning and those last all through the day (8:45 am - 8:30 pm). In between all of the small seizures, Anna would cry, then sleep for 10 - 15 minutes, and then wake again with more small seizures. Doctors did not want to stop them in hopes that she might have a bigger seizure on the left side. After reviewing all of the information from the strips on her brain thus far, doctors finally stop the seizures around 8:30 last night. I am hoping that she and Louis got some good rest last night.

The doctors did have a conference last night and then called me at home with in Louis in the room with them at the hospital. They recommended doing surgery on the left side of her brain by disconnecting the fibers around the region in which her hardest and longest seizures exist. This area of the brain does have control of speech, eye coordination, and coordination skills. These are all of the areas (excluding eye coordination) that Anna has development delays. They said in young children the brain is able to re-map these skills and in Anna's case with her seizure activity they don't think her brain has ever been able to map these skills. After the surgery she may be dazed for a couple of days and her ability to pull up and walk with a walker will have probably regressed. However, with therapy and time, they expect that her development will increase in the areas that she is delayed. They do not expect that she will be 100% "normal" and she will continue to need medication for the seizures that occur on the right side of her brain. The goal is to reduce/eliminate the seizures causing the most development delay and improve her quality of life.

We will meet with the surgeon today to discuss details, surgery time, recovery schedule, and if we can come home on Christmas Eve. Last night, they mentioned that we may be there another week after surgery.

Please pray that all of this goes well. There are so many specifics to pray for I don't know where to start. This is just a little overwhelming, right? In addition to praying for Anna and the surgeons, please remember our little Camille. She was up during the night with a sore throat and her 7th birthday is tomorrow, the same day as the surgery.

Thanks so much for all of the love, support, and words of encouragement!
Rebecca

We're praying for a restful day today for Anna, Mom, & Dad! God's looking down on you and will be with you all and especially during the surgery tomorrow. Please be sure and tell Camille that "Grandma Claire" sends her birthday love. May God bless you all! Love, Claire
